Michael Rosen’s questions to try (sometimes!) when reading together:

  • Is there anything in this text that reminds you of anything that has happened to you or anyone you know?
  • Is there anything in this text that reminds you of anything that you’ve ever read, or viewed as, say, a play, film, TV programme etc.?
  • Is there anything that you would like to ask the writer or anybody or any ‘thing’ in this text?
  • I like the word/phrase…
  • Why do you think the author used the word…
  • Can you think of another word that means the same?
  • If the author has used a mixture of long and short sentences, notice how the short sentences have ‘impact’ or are more dramatic.

Daniel Pennac The Rights of the Reader

  • The right not to read
  • The right to skip
  • The right not to finish a book
  • The right to read it again
  • The right to read anything
  • The right to mistake a book for real life
  • The right to read anywhere
  • The right to dip in
  • The right to read out loud
  • The right to be quiet
  • “I read to my teenagers at mealtimes now!”
